Northeast Community Credit Union celebrated the ribbon cutting and official grand re-opening of their 19E Branch Friday morning.

NCCU’s 19E Branch in Elizabethton originally opened in 2007. The branch was severely damaged and suffered a total loss from flooding during Hurricane Helene in September 2024 leading to the demolition of the original office building.

“That morning, we were at a ribbon cutting in downtown,” said NCCU President/CEO David LeVeau. “We closed our offices at 11 a.m. and by 2 p.m., the flood waters had risen.”

More than six feet of flood waters filled the building, bringing along mud and debris and damaged the foundation of the structure. After the waters receded, dangerous mold was found throughout the building.

“We were hurt by that storm,” LeVeau said. “So many people in our community were hurting as well. It was a difficult time for all and we were determined to rebuild with our members and our community in mind.”

While NCCU leadership surveyed the damage, all staff from 19E were brought into the Main Office. In early 2025, a temporary office building was installed on the property allowing NCCU to continue to serve its members at the 19E location while rebuilding a new branch began.

The 19E rebuild project came in the midst of the renovation and expansion of NCCU’s Main Office.

“We had a project of building a temporary unit, while we had construction and renovations at the Main Office,” LeVeau said. “The construction team immediately sprang into action to assist us to get a temporary facility in place and to get started on the rebuilding a new branch.”

Now, less than a year after construction began on the new 19E Branch building, NCCU welcomes members back into a new facility.  LeVeau expressed his gratitude to the City of Elizabethton, the Planning Commission, the NCCU Board and the resilience of the NCCU team along with many other partners that helped make the Branch rebuild and Grand Re-Opening a reality.

The branch is led by long-time Branch Manager Wendy Mahan and newly promoted Assistant Branch Manager Holly Adams.
