Amy Banner latest Helping Teachers Teach winner

Banner plans to use the Helping Teachers Teach grant to purchase a set of Spanish language novels to help promote free voluntary reading, or recreational reading, among her students. The novels are written with Spanish language learners in mind to help them acquire and retain more of the language they are learning.

“This project will help me provide level appropriate, high interest readers for my students and help them to exponentially grow their vocabulary in Spanish,” Banner said. “Evidence from several areas continues to show that those who do more free voluntary reading show better development in reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.”

Northeast Community Credit Union awards $300 every month to a classroom to be utilized for classroom needs, classroom activities, and academic enrichment.  Helping Teachers Teach is open to teachers within Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan and Washington counties who are members of Northeast Community Credit Union. NCCU donates to ARM

Northeast Community Credit Union presented a $500 donation to Assistance and Resource Ministries (ARM) as part of their annual partnership with the non-profit agency.

ARM relies on community donations to provide assistance to hundreds of people each month. ARM provides meals, monthly food boxes, clothing, baby supplies, vouchers for additional household needs, referrals to other agencies, employment counseling and much more.

NCCU has a long-standing relationship with ARM and has supported the agency throughout the years with fundraisers, volunteer hours and collection efforts.

“The folks at ARM work hard to benefit the needy in Carter County and help with necessities for people who can use a hand,” NCCU President/CEO Teresa Arnold said. “We are thankful for the opportunity to help and support their cause.”

NCCU donates to Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter

Northeast Community Credit Union’s Board of Directors includes the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter in their community sponsorship efforts. NCCU recently presented a $500 donation as part of the annual partnership to ECCAS Director Shannon Posada.

Posada said the donation will be used to cover the day-to-day expenses at the animal shelter – including pet adoption sponsorships, pet and cleaning supplies, medical care, food and toys for the pets and more.

NCCU donates to Shepherd’s Inn

Northeast Community Credit Union recently donated $500 to the Shepherd’s Inn.

The Shepherd’s Inn is Carter County’s only safe house and emergency shelter for women and their children who are seeking shelter from domestic violence or temporary homelessness.

The Shepherd’s Inn began providing emergency shelter to women and children in 1997. Since then, thousands of clients have received confidential emergency shelter, meals and other forms of aid.

Virtually presenting this year’s donation on behalf of NCCU to the Shepherd’s Inn is Nikki Garland of NCCU.

NCCU contributes to Carter County Imagination Library

Northeast Community Credit Union is investing in the children of Carter County with a donation of $1,000 to the Carter County Imagination Library.

Northeast Community Credit Union is a Foundation Member of CCIL and has contributed $1,000 each year since the start of Carter County Imagination Library. Carter County Imagination Library provides a free book to children in Carter County every month from birth until they turn five years old.

“Our credit union has made a commitment to our community to annually donate a percentage of proceeds to organizations and worthwhile causes,” NCCU President/CEO Teresa Arnold said. “We are so thankful that we can help provide books to children in our county.”  Virtually presenting this year’s donation on behalf of NCCU to Carter County Imagination Library is Regina Chambers of NCCU.

CCIL Chair Lilo Duncan said the cost to provide children with books from birth until age 5 is around $150 per child.

NCCU donates to East Tennessee Christian Children’s Home

Northeast Community Credit Union recently donated $220 to the East Tennessee Christian Children’s Home and Academy to help them continue their goal of “Growing Girls God’s Way.”

Each year, NCCU donates a total of $500 to ETCHA as part of its community charitable contribution goal. Earlier in the year, NCCU contributed to the ETCHA golf tournament, providing the rest of the $500 yearly gift.

ETCHA provides help to at-risk adolescent girls and their families. ETCHA offers on-campus housing, education and ministry, and depends on donations to help keep their ministry going.

NCCU makes donation to Recovery Soldiers Ministries

Northeast Community Credit Union’s Board of Directors includes Recovery Soldiers Ministries in its community sponsorship efforts. NCCU recently presented a donation as part of its annual partnership to Recovery Soldiers Ministries Program Director EJ Eggers.

“Recovery Soldiers Ministries provides a tremendous service to our community,” NCCU President/CEO Teresa Arnold said. “We want to support them as they continue to help those in need. We strongly believe in the importance of sharing, caring, and giving back in our communities. That’s the real credit union difference.”

Recovery Soldiers Ministries is a faith-based recovery program to help individuals overcome addiction. Students in the program live on campus for a highly structured year-long inpatient program. Currently, approximately 30 people are registered in the program.   Along with the inpatient program, Recovery Soldiers Ministries has outpatient sessions and has a thrift store to help support their mission.

NCCU sponsors Chamber Youth Ambassador Program

Northeast Community Credit Union pleased to be a sponsor for the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Chamber Youth Ambassador Program.
 
The purpose of the CYA program is for youth to experience all the things our community offers as a great place to work, live, and visit.
 
The program highlighted the very unique areas, careers, and businesses in our region to spark interest in possible career choices and choices for higher education to obtain specific careers, as well as careers that follow a vocational route too.
 
The youth also explored parts of our region that bring people here for vacation and how these attractions support our community. They met with our local governments to learn more about what it takes to make all these things work together.

Amanda Colbaugh latest Helping Teachers Teach winner

Amanda Colbaugh, fifth grade teacher at Valley Forge Elementary, is the latest Northeast Community Credit Union Helping Teacher’s Teach grant winner.

Colbaugh plans use to the Helping Teacher’s Teach grant to purchase new textbooks for fifth-grade reading and social studies students. The Gallopade Curriculum textbooks combine textbook content with workbook activities.

“Students master grade-appropriate content and skills as outlined in the standards, while building literacy, critical thinking skills and more,” Colbaugh said. “Students build knowledge, deepen understanding, and develop strong comprehension and analytical skills. This approach also increases students’ ability to recall and apply what they learn throughout the school year.”
